MMA, Boxing & Combat Sports Blood Tests

Pre-Competition Blood Testing in Cavan & Kildare

Blood Testing for MMA, Boxing, Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Other Combat Sports

Many combat sports organisations require competitors to provide evidence of recent blood testing before participating in sanctioned events. These tests help protect athletes by screening for certain blood-borne viruses that can be transmitted through blood-to-blood contact during competition.

At CUC Medical & Aesthetics, we provide private pre-competition blood testing for athletes competing in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and other combat sports.

Appointments are available at our clinics in Cavan and Kildare, with all samples analysed by Eurofins Biomnis, one of Europe's leading accredited medical laboratories.

Blood Draw Procedure

Who Is This Blood Test For?

This blood test is suitable for:

  • Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competitors

  • Amateur and professional boxers

  • Kickboxing competitors

  • Muay Thai athletes

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors

  • Submission grapplers

  • Other combat sports athletes requiring blood clearance before competition

If your governing body or event promoter requires blood screening before competing, this panel includes the most commonly requested blood-borne virus tests.

What Tests Are Included?

Hepatitis B Core Total Antibodies

This test looks for evidence of previous or current exposure to the Hepatitis B virus.

Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg)

This test checks for an active Hepatitis B infection.

Hepatitis C Antibodies

This test screens for antibodies to the Hepatitis C virus, indicating previous or current infection.

HIV 1 & 2 Antibodies / p24 Antigen

This combined test screens for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and is designed to detect infection as early as possible using both antibody and p24 antigen testing.

Why Are These Blood Tests Required?

Combat sports involve close physical contact and, in some disciplines, there is a possibility of blood-to-blood exposure through cuts or abrasions.

Many governing bodies require competitors to provide recent blood test results before competing to help reduce the risk of transmission of blood-borne viruses and to promote athlete safety.

Requirements can vary between organisations and events, so you should always check with your governing body or event promoter to confirm which tests are required and how recent your results must be.

Understanding Your Results

Your blood sample will be analysed by Eurofins Biomnis, one of Europe's leading accredited medical laboratories.

Most results are available within 5–7 working days, although turnaround times may vary depending on laboratory processing.

Every blood test result is reviewed by one of our doctors before being released.

You will receive your official laboratory PDF report, together with a personalised email confirming your results.

If any result requires urgent medical review, one of our doctors will contact you directly by telephone.

If you would like to discuss your results in more detail, you can book a Medical Consultation online. You are also welcome to share your laboratory report with your own GP.

Can I use these results for my competition? Yes. We regularly work with MMA clubs and combat sports organisations throughout Ireland, providing pre-competition blood testing and pre-fight medicals for athletes. Your official laboratory results will be provided in PDF format and are suitable for submission to your promoter or governing body where these tests are accepted. As individual organisations may have specific requirements regarding the tests required or the validity period of results, we recommend confirming these with your promoter or governing body before your event. This version positions CUC as an experienced provider in the combat sports community, reassures athletes that the results are appropriate for competition, and still acknowledges that individual organisations set their own medical requirements.
