Electrocardiogram (ECG)
What is an ECG?
An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a simple, painless test that records the electrical activity of your heart. It provides important information about your heart rhythm and can help identify abnormalities that may require further investigation.
The test takes only a few minutes to perform. Small adhesive electrodes are placed on your chest, arms and legs, allowing the ECG machine to record your heart's electrical signals. The procedure is completely non-invasive and does not involve any needles or injections.
An ECG May Be Recommended If You Have:
✓ Chest pain or discomfort
✓ Palpitations or an irregular heartbeat
✓ Dizziness or fainting episodes
✓ Shortness of breath
✓ High blood pressure
✓ A family history of heart disease
✓ As part of a routine health assessment
24-Hour Blood Pressure Monitoring
What is 24-Hour Blood Pressure Monitoring?
Unlike a single blood pressure reading taken in clinic, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring provides a much more accurate picture of how your blood pressure changes throughout the day and night.
A small blood pressure monitor is fitted to your arm and worn for 24 hours while you continue your normal daily activities. The monitor automatically records your blood pressure at regular intervals, providing detailed information about your average blood pressure, daytime and nighttime readings, and overall blood pressure patterns.
This is considered the gold standard for diagnosing and monitoring high blood pressure.
24-Hour Blood Pressure Monitoring May Be Recommended If You:
✓ Have elevated blood pressure readings
✓ Require investigation for suspected hypertension
✓ Need monitoring of blood pressure medication
✓ Experience symptoms such as dizziness or light-headedness
✓ Have a family history of hypertension
✓ Require confirmation of blood pressure control
What to Expect
Your doctor will discuss your symptoms and medical history before recommending the most appropriate investigation.
For an ECG, the test is completed during your appointment and reviewed by your doctor.
For 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, the monitor is fitted in clinic and worn for 24 hours before being returned. Your doctor will then analyse the results and discuss any findings, treatment recommendations or further investigations if required.
When Should I Call 999 or Attend an Emergency Department?
While an ECG or 24-hour blood pressure monitor can help investigate many heart and blood pressure concerns, some symptoms require immediate emergency medical attention.
Call 999 or 112, or attend your nearest Emergency Department immediately if you experience:
✓ Chest pain or tightness, particularly if it spreads to your arm, jaw, neck or back
✓ Sudden shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
✓ Loss of consciousness or collapse
✓ Persistent palpitations associated with dizziness, fainting or chest pain
✓ Symptoms of a stroke, including facial drooping, arm weakness or difficulty speaking
✓ Sudden severe headache accompanied by confusion, weakness or vision changes
✓ Severe or persistently high blood pressure associated with chest pain, severe headache, vision changes or neurological symptoms
If your symptoms are severe, worsening or you believe you are experiencing a medical emergency, do not wait for a clinic appointment—seek emergency medical care immediately.
