When a Skin Lesion Needs a Closer Look
A new skin lesion, a change in something that has been there for some time, or an area that simply doesn’t look or behave as you would expect can be a reason to have it assessed.
At CUC Medical, our doctor-led skin lesion biopsy service provides a clear pathway from clinical assessment through to biopsy and specialist laboratory analysis where appropriate.
The aim is simple: to understand what the lesion is and determine whether anything further needs to be done.

Skin Lesion Assessment & Biopsy
Not every skin lesion needs to be biopsied.
Your appointment begins with a clinical assessment of the area you are concerned about. Your doctor will examine the lesion, discuss any changes or symptoms you have noticed and determine the most appropriate next step.
Where the appearance or behaviour of a lesion means a definitive diagnosis is needed, a biopsy may be recommended.
This involves taking a small sample of the lesion — or removing it where appropriate — so that the tissue can be examined by a specialist laboratory.
What Might Prompt You to Have a Lesion Checked?
You may have noticed something new.
Perhaps an existing lesion has changed in size, shape, colour or texture. It may have started bleeding, crusting, becoming irritated or simply looks different from before.
Or you may have an area of skin that isn't healing as expected.
You don't need to decide for yourself whether a biopsy is necessary.
If something has changed or is concerning you, the starting point is having it properly assessed.
What Happens During a Skin Biopsy?
If a biopsy is clinically appropriate, your doctor will explain the procedure and why it has been recommended before proceeding.
The area is typically numbed using local anaesthetic before a small sample of tissue, or the lesion itself where appropriate, is removed.
The tissue is then sent for histopathology, where it is examined under a microscope by a specialist pathologist to establish a diagnosis.
The exact biopsy technique used will depend on the type, size and location of the lesion and what your doctor needs to determine.
Your Results & What Happens Next
Getting a result is just as important as performing the biopsy.
Once your histopathology report is available, the findings can be reviewed and the appropriate next steps explained to you.
For some lesions, no further treatment may be necessary. Others may require monitoring, further removal or referral for specialist assessment or treatment.
Whatever the result, the focus is on ensuring you understand what has been found and what needs to happen next.
