The Full Story

Understanding Pigmentation

Pigmentation is a common skin concern that causes patches of skin to appear darker than the surrounding area. It may develop gradually over time due to sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation or the natural ageing process. Identifying the type and underlying cause of pigmentation is essential to choosing the most effective treatment.

What is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation occurs when excess melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour, is produced or deposited within the skin. This can result in brown, grey or darker patches that vary in size, depth and appearance.

Some forms of pigmentation affect only the surface of the skin, while others develop deeper within the skin and require a different treatment approach.

Types of Pigmentation

Different types of pigmentation require different treatment strategies.

Signs & Symptoms

Pigmentation may present as:

  • Brown or grey patches

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Sun spots

  • Age spots

  • Dark marks following acne

  • Hormonal pigmentation

  • Areas that darken following sun exposure

What Causes Pigmentation?

Pigmentation develops when melanin production is disrupted.

Common causes include:

  • Sun exposure

  • Hormonal changes

  • Pregnancy

  • Oral contraceptive use

  • Skin inflammation

  • Acne

  • Skin injury

  • Ageing

  • Genetics

  • Certain medications

How is Pigmentation Diagnosed?

A clinical skin assessment helps determine the type, depth and likely cause of pigmentation.

At CUC Medical & Aesthetics, an OBSERV 520x Skin Analysis may be recommended to assess pigmentation beneath the skin's surface, allowing early changes to be identified before they become visible.

This enables a personalised treatment plan based on your individual skin concerns.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the type and depth of pigmentation and may include:

Why Sciton BBL HERO® is Effective for Pigmentation

Sciton BBL HERO® uses advanced BroadBand Light technology to selectively target excess melanin within the skin while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue.

Following treatment, pigmented lesions often darken before naturally flaking away over the following days, revealing a clearer and more even complexion.

Benefits may include:

  • Reduction in sun damage

  • Improvement in age spots

  • Brighter skin tone

  • More even complexion

  • Minimal downtime

  • Treatment suitable for multiple areas of the body

Why Sciton Nano Peel is Effective for Pigmentation

Sciton Nano Peel® is a superficial laser peel that gently removes the outermost layers of damaged skin, helping to improve skin brightness, uneven pigmentation and overall complexion. By accelerating the skin's natural renewal process, it can reduce the appearance of superficial pigmentation while promoting a smoother, healthier-looking skin surface.

Benefits may include:

  • Improved skin brightness

  • Reduction in superficial pigmentation

  • More even skin tone

  • Smoother skin texture

  • Minimal downtime

  • Suitable as a standalone treatment or in combination with other therapies

Why SkinPen Elite® May Be Recommended

SkinPen Elite® is not a primary treatment for pigmentation but can be an effective addition to a personalised treatment plan for selected patients. By stimulating your skin's natural healing response and encouraging collagen production, SkinPen Elite® helps improve overall skin quality, texture, and skin renewal while enhancing the penetration and effectiveness of professional skincare products.

It may be particularly beneficial for patients with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) following acne, uneven skin texture, or pigmentation associated with ageing. For conditions such as melasma, SkinPen Elite® may be considered alongside medical-grade skincare and other treatments where clinically appropriate.

Benefits may include:

  • Improved skin texture and overall skin quality

  • Smoother, healthier-looking skin

  • Increased collagen production

  • Enhanced skin renewal

  • Improved appearance of post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH)

  • Supports the results of medical-grade skincare and complementary pigmentation treatments

Why Sciton Contour TRL® May Be Recommended

For more advanced or treatment-resistant pigmentation, Sciton Contour TRL® Deep Laser Resurfacing may be recommended. This ablative laser treatment removes damaged skin layers while stimulating significant collagen remodelling, helping to improve deeper pigmentation, sun damage and overall skin quality.

Due to the intensity of treatment and longer recovery period, suitability is determined following a comprehensive consultation.

Benefits may include:

  • Improvement in deeper pigmentation

  • Reduction in sun damage

  • Smoother skin texture

  • Improved skin tone

  • Significant skin rejuvenation

  • Long-lasting results in appropriately selected patients

Why Medical Skincare is Essential

Successful pigmentation treatment extends beyond in-clinic procedures.

Medical-grade skincare plays an important role in regulating melanin production, improving skin renewal and reducing the risk of recurrence.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF protection is essential to help prevent pigmentation from returning following treatment.

Not All Pigmentation Should Be Treated with Laser

Not every area of pigmentation is suitable for cosmetic treatment. While many pigmented lesions are harmless, others may require medical assessment before any treatment is considered. Identifying the cause of pigmentation and confirming that a lesion is benign is an essential first step in ensuring safe and appropriate care.

At CUC Medical & Aesthetics, every patient undergoes a comprehensive consultation and skin assessment before treatment. Where there is any uncertainty regarding the nature of a pigmented lesion, cosmetic treatment will not proceed until it has been appropriately assessed. If clinically indicated, our doctor-led team can arrange skin biopsies and minor surgical procedures to investigate suspicious lesions or establish a diagnosis before recommending further treatment.

Our priority is always patient safety. By combining medical expertise with advanced aesthetic treatments, we ensure that every patient receives a personalised treatment plan based on an accurate diagnosis, not assumptions.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Arrange an assessment if you notice:

  • New areas of pigmentation

  • Pigmentation changing in colour or appearance

  • Dark patches that continue to enlarge

  • Pigmentation following acne or injury

  • Uneven skin tone affecting your confidence

  • Skin lesions that appear unusual or continue changing

Some pigmented lesions may require medical assessment before cosmetic treatment is considered.
