The Full Story

Understanding Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a common skin concern that can develop following periods of rapid growth or stretching of the skin, including pregnancy, weight changes and puberty. Although harmless, many people wish to improve their appearance. While stretch marks cannot be completely removed, modern treatments can significantly improve their texture, colour and overall appearance by stimulating the skin's natural collagen production.

What are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks, also known as striae, are a type of scar that develops when the skin stretches faster than its collagen and elastin fibres can adapt. This causes small tears within the deeper layers of the skin, resulting in visible lines or streaks.

Stretch marks commonly occur on the:

  • Abdomen

  • Hips

  • Thighs

  • Buttocks

  • Breasts

  • Upper arms

  • Lower back

They affect both men and women and are extremely common.

Types of Stretch Marks

Red Stretch Marks (Striae Rubrae)

These are newly formed stretch marks that appear red, pink or purple due to increased blood flow within the skin. Early treatment is often more effective during this stage.

White Stretch Marks (Striae Albae)

As stretch marks mature, they gradually fade to white or silvery lines. Although more challenging to treat, improvements in texture and appearance can still be achieved through collagen-stimulating treatments.

Signs & Symptoms

Stretch marks may appear as:

  • Red, pink or purple lines

  • White or silvery scars

  • Thin, depressed streaks

  • Uneven skin texture

  • Areas of thinner skin

  • Loss of skin elasticity

What Causes Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks develop when the skin stretches beyond its ability to adapt.

Common causes include:

  • Pregnancy

  • Rapid weight gain or weight loss

  • Puberty and growth spurts

  • Muscle growth

  • Genetics

  • Hormonal changes

  • Long-term corticosteroid use

Not everyone develops stretch marks, and genetics plays an important role in determining who is more susceptible.

How are Stretch Marks Diagnosed?

Stretch marks are diagnosed during a clinical skin assessment. Your clinician will assess the age, colour, depth and location of the stretch marks before recommending the most appropriate treatment plan.

The stage of the stretch marks is an important factor in determining which treatments are likely to provide the greatest improvement.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the age, colour and severity of the stretch marks and may include:

Why SkinPen Elite® is Effective

SkinPen Elite® creates controlled microchannels within the skin, stimulating the body's natural wound healing response and encouraging new collagen and elastin production.

This process helps remodel scar tissue and improve the appearance of stretch marks over time.

Benefits may include:

  • Improved skin texture

  • Increased collagen production

  • Smoother skin surface

  • Improved skin quality

  • Minimal downtime

  • Suitable for many skin types

Why Sciton ProFractional™ Laser is Effective

Sciton ProFractional™ Laser delivers precise microscopic laser channels into the skin while leaving surrounding tissue intact, stimulating collagen remodelling and encouraging healthy skin regeneration.

This treatment can improve both the texture and appearance of stretch marks while promoting smoother, firmer skin.

Benefits may include:

  • Improved appearance of stretch marks

  • Increased collagen remodelling

  • Smoother skin texture

  • Enhanced skin firmness

  • Faster healing compared with fully ablative laser treatments

  • Suitable for treating larger body areas

Why Early Treatment is Important

Stretch marks change over time. When they first develop, they are typically red, pink or purple in colour due to increased blood flow and active inflammation within the skin. During this early stage, the skin is undergoing natural repair, making it more responsive to collagen-stimulating treatments.

As stretch marks mature, they gradually fade to white or silvery lines. Although treatment can still improve their appearance, older stretch marks are generally more resistant and often require additional sessions or combination treatments to achieve the best possible outcome.

Seeking treatment early may help improve skin texture, stimulate collagen production and achieve greater overall improvement. However, regardless of how long you have had stretch marks, a personalised treatment plan can still help enhance the appearance and quality of your skin.

Why Combination Treatments Often Deliver the Best Results

Stretch marks affect the deeper layers of the skin, meaning no single treatment is suitable for every patient. In many cases, combining collagen-stimulating treatments provides the greatest improvement.

Your personalised treatment plan may include SkinPen Elite® Microneedling, Sciton ProFractional™ Laser, medical-grade skincare and collagen-supporting treatments to maximise skin regeneration and improve overall skin quality.

Can Stretch Marks Be Completely Removed?

Stretch marks are a form of scar and cannot usually be completely removed. However, appropriate treatment can significantly improve their colour, texture and visibility.

The greatest improvements are generally seen with early intervention, although mature stretch marks can also respond well to collagen-stimulating treatments.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Arrange a consultation if:

  • Your stretch marks are affecting your confidence.

  • You would like to improve their appearance.

  • You are unsure which treatment is most appropriate.

  • Your stretch marks developed suddenly without an obvious cause.

  • You would like advice on preventing further stretch marks.
